Fairytales for Adults?

Written by Alicia Isaacs

Think fairytales are just for children? Think again. They may very well hold the secret code for changing your life, understanding your children and developing closer relationships with them.

Parents have handed down Fairytales from generation to generation, from one culture to another integrating with our society, regardless of a person’s status. It is uncertain from where many of these stories have originated, but have become an intricate part of the fascinating imaginary entertainment for children across the globe.

Have you ever thought that there could be some truth to these stories? This thought-provoking question was the theme of the first session “What do fairytales tell us about child development?” of the 6-week workshop hosted by speaker, Eleanor Deckert.

According to Deckert, could simple oral traditions hold rich symbolic meaning and a true map for the invisible journey of our innermost being?

Perhaps these fairytales have become so mentally embedded during story time from infancy, toddler hood, childhood, youth and young adulthood because we subconsciously identify and empathize with the characters of these stories.

Noted by Deckert, “As the Hero or Heroine meet loss, endless tasks and face death, so, too, we each pass through these inner wanderings, battles and reach for the happy ending.”

Therefore, then, it is imperative that careful consideration is given to unveiling the valuable lessons being transported through these fairytales as they may very well be the necessary guidelines for parenting and those responsible for children, aiding them in their development and laying a solid foundation for their journey.

Deckert encouraged a very interactive workshop as the attendees brainstorm fairytale titles like Cinderella, Snow White, 12 Dancing Princesses and many more and identify similar events and patterns within each story.

The findings were then related to real-life stages of a child’s life beginning with infancy; the joy of the parents having a new baby and the desire to protect, provide for and do everything necessary for the baby’s contentment and well being.

As the infant becomes a toddler, he learns by mimicking the parent. Regularity and repetition are important at this stage to develop positive habitual behaviours. Mimicking eyes carefully examine and absorb behaviours around them, therefore parents and caregivers are encouraged to be conscious of the message they are displaying.

Children are unable to self-govern, so rules govern them. Eleanor Deckert says, “Being able to say ‘no’ to a child is a healthy part of parenting.”

As children turn into the teen stage, the struggle for their own self-governance begins and they may view authority figures negatively.

Establishment of secondary supports, such as a mentor, relative, a scout leader etc., for the teen to turn to for help, if needed, is imperative.

The struggle for a teen moving into young adulthood is heeding the warnings. “If the mind comes to rescue the heart, the mind has to overcome the ugly voice, “I’m so stupid, I’m so dumb.” says Deckert. I know what the rules are and I want to overcome them - creating a marriage between the heart and mind.
