Waltz, Fox Trot, Salsa or Jive?

Written by Alicia Isaacs

Social dancing challenges beginners to get out of their comfort zone, but it can be quite pleasurable to the more experienced.

Beginner students, Jessica Stenberg and Brandon Luxton, both find it challenging to learn the new steps, however, they still continue to pursue learning and perfecting the steps with the diligent aid of their dance instructor Jill McMillan.

When asked what prompted them to join the dance class, Brandon said, “It was Jessica’s idea, but it’s getting me out of my comfort zone.” It’s their 4th class and they both continue to work hard to master the challenging steps.

Bob and Marilyn Grant have been dancing on and off for the last 20 years and have returned for a refresher. They appear to float and glide through each dance step with ease, and lend their expertise to help others still struggling to master the steps.

The dance class encompasses the Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Salsa, Jive and Cha Cha.

The Waltz starts with a box - raise left arm, step with left, turn partner and step into a box. Box turns are used to get out of a corner when a bunch of people are there.

Students learn the basic Foxtrot steps starting with the left foot, which always leads. The chest is used as a compass when dancing zigzag steps along the floor.

Having learned the basis steps of Foxtrot and Jive, students were equipped to combine the two dance styles as these styles both have the same timing.

Cha cha and Rumba are basically the same. When the man has his arm raised, the lady has to keep turning until he takes his hand down.

Rumba is continuous feet motion with the feet in constant contact with the floor. The lady mirrors the man in the side rock step.

Various hand signals are used in these dances to indicate to the lady a change is about to occur.

These dances are totally recreational and are for people who would like to go to a social event and be able to dance with style.

As a form of pleasurable exercise, Social Dancing challenges the body.

According to Jill, people who have problems walking have no problems with these dances as the movement in dancing is different from those in walking.

Jill plans to introduce a ‘grad special’ for the New Year to encourage graduating students to take up these challenging but rewarding dances.
