Clearwater’s Winter Wonderland showcase for creative artists

Written by Alicia Isaacs

Local artists parade their ingenious creativity at the 12th Annual Clearwater Winter Wonderland which took place at the Clearwater Ski Hill on Sunday December 2, 2007.

Self-taught artist, Eckhart Manthei (“Ecki”), showed off his exhibit of common river rocks which he creatively transformed into creative workmanship varying from a hand painted wolf, night capture of Helmcken Falls to a bald eagle in flight. Eckhart has an eye to the hidden beauty in a piece of wood and then draws out that beauty so others can enjoy it, as brought out in his wooden owl piece. Eckhart noticed the two knots in a piece of wood which looked like owl’s eyes, so he decided to paint it and enhance the features that he’d seen in the wood.

Lynn Sherk has been an artist since 1970 and paints mainly local sceneries. Lynn’s unique interpretation featured the Helmcken Falls creatively crafted into an oak leaf.

Artisan-Woodturner, Errol C. Redman (Carman’s Creations) explores his craft using a variety of local woods such as chestnut, walnut, horse chestnut, Russian olive, used in the Okanagan as a shade tree, apple, juniper and California Redwood. His creations include a variety of items from the unique nut cracker in a wooden dish, tea bag dish, vases, bowls, jewelry boxes, spice holders, spoons, canisters, jars, memorial urns and much more.

Jean McRobert’s timely Stuff ‘n Such knitted items showcased acrylic scarves, woolen socks and acrylic sweaters.

Susan, Pat and Dorothy proudly showed off their quilts inviting others to come and join them at their quilters club which meets on the 3rd Monday of every month at the Elk’s Hall.

Stuart Bates made himself at home in his comfy rocking chair made of birch. In spite of the Pine Beetle attack, Stuart has creatively produced a “denim” pine chest which, to his amazement, advised that other people actually like the blue in the wood.

Self-publisher, Peter Grauer, did some extensive research on the American bandit bill Miner’s and produced a 645-page book, “Interred with their Bones”, complete with bibliography, sources, an index and high-quality illustrations.
